How To Get Past Effects Of Alcoholism

by Chris Channing

Studies have shown that adults who drink one or two alcoholic beverages a day often live longer than people who do not drink at all. But studies also link alcohol with a variety of other health issues such as liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, cognitive problems, and pancreatitis. So how many drinks are too many? When does having a good time become an addiction? Although alcohol remains legal, the fact is that it is a hard drug, comparable in its addictiveness to illegal drugs such as heroin and amphetamines.

When a person has to drink alcohol in order to keep their life normal, they are by definition, an alcoholic. Alcoholism is a progressive disease. This means that as alcoholism continues, a person’s well being will continue to deteriorate. First and foremost one must consume alcohol in order to be an alcoholic. Most drinkers aren’t binge drinkers, and a vast majority of people are happy with having a few beers to take the edge off. Those who do drink to excess constantly are probably used to having hangovers, and are considered to be alcoholics.

Alcoholism starts as a psychological addiction and can quickly lead to physical dependence. Once a person feels the need to drink to maintain normality within their life, they are already started down the path towards addiction.

At first, problems stemming from alcohol related crimes may cause a person to end up in court because of alcohol related offenses such as public intoxication or driving drunk. They may end up disappointing their family and friends because they show up to events while inebriated or act foolish while drunk around them. If these sorts of things occur and the person continues to drink, then that person is an alcoholic.

It is at this stage that the person either decides to stop drinking, or they continue to drink. Once a person continues to drink, they have become dependent on alcohol. If someone is dependent on alcohol they often spend large amounts of time doing alcohol related activities, incorporate alcohol into activities where one does usually not drink, and they begin to develop a tolerance to the alcohol they are drinking.

With tolerance comes the need to drink more to stay drunk. A chemical dependency is soon added to the list of the alcoholic’s problems, and in order to feel well, the alcoholic must have alcohol in their system.

After a few more hours without alcohol, a heavy drinker may enter into delirium tremens. They begin to see things that aren’t there, lose control over the shaking of their body parts, and sometimes don’t even know who they are or what day it is. Seizures, strokes, and heart attacks can all take place and kill the alcoholic at this point, and there is no way to stop a delirium tremens after it has begun.

You must simply hope that the person lives through the ordeal and never drinks again. Dropping the bottle and never picking it back up can be difficult, even deadly, but with the aid of support groups or licensed professionals, it can be done.
