There are many different myths in relation to alcohol addiction that anyone who consumes alcohol should know about. Knowing when one has an addiction, if they are liable to becoming addicted, or even getting the straight facts about alcoholism is important so a severe addiction doesn’t overtake one’s life.
The first common myth is that alcohol addiction is just a bad habit from those who are weak to the prospect of a good time. But in reality, alcohol affects some people differently in addiction, which also explains why some people are more resistant to drug addiction than others. Addiction also commonly occurs in certain families, which may suggest that addiction probability is slightly hereditary.
It might be logical to suggest that after a few years of being free of alcohol, one could gently start trying out small amounts of alcohol again. This could not be more dangerous, as many times alcoholism is a chronic matter- meaning it could strike at any time alcohol is consumed. It is actually suggested that alcoholics stay alcohol free their entire lives after reaching sobriety.
Based on what many see from reality TV shows and personal experiences, another myth is that alcoholics almost never fully recover. This might be true in some cases, but alcoholics don’t always recover on the first try. In most patients, it is an ongoing struggle to remain free from the effects of alcohol. Thus, the fight against alcoholism may take more than one attempt, but it is certainly not an impossible fight.
In a world of competition and confidence, many will say that those who fall victim to the effects of alcoholism are just weak and lack any real willpower. But getting over an alcohol addiction is more than just mental, it’s a physical process as one’s body will have physical withdrawals. In some patients, hospitalization may be required as the process is so rigorous.
As a final note, many myths claim that technology has reached a plateau in the sense that there haven’t been many breakthroughs recently in the recovery industry. It may be true that no major breakthroughs have made the process a one step scenario, but advances in drugs and therapy have indeed made the likelihood of recovery much better over the decades. Technology continues to improve everyday, and it’s only a matter of time before even simpler measures are found.

Myths in alcohol recovery can be very misleading. Believing any lies that such myths create can make the matter of alcoholism much worse. In the case of the myth that social drinking is possible after a certain amount of time, a full relapse might be experienced in some instances. Thus, knowing the facts is important in both overcoming and staying from of alcohol’s effects.
