Why Celebrity Drug Rehabilitations Fail

by Chris Channing

What hope can average people have in overcoming an addiction via drug rehab, if even celebrities can’t overcome theirs? After all, celebrities have access to first class rehabilitation centers that cost thousands of dollars per week- something the average person can’t gain entry to. But as we soon find out, celebrities may even have it worse.

Celebrities have always been able to escape the justice system because of their status with the media. This is seen with the event in which popular culture icons such as Paris Hilton avoided harsh jail sentences, serving three of her 45-day sentence of the original charges of driving offenses. Because they can get away with things much easier, they have a disregard for the penalties that most people hold.

A celebrity can get away with more than the average person in more ways than one. For instance, they can obtain drugs much easier and in a secretive fashion that average citizens can’t. In fact, odds are that celebrities will be caught with drugs or under the influence of drugs rather than be caught trying to buy them. Since they can afford this secrecy, they will be more inclined to buy drugs without worries of repercussions.

A drug rehab center can verge away from its initial purpose by offering services and catering to every whim of a celebrity’s need, and instead act more like a vacationing resort. A celebrity will be less likely to be focused on their problem if they are instead relaxing and enjoying a vacation, and thus, celebrities will be more likely to be less motivated and committed.

Commitment is a big issue when trying to overcome an addiction. If a consumer can stay committed, they will be more likely to stay clean of a drug. Commitment is often achieved when paying high prices for drug rehab centers, for the average person. But celebrities can waltz in and out of drug rehab centers without much care, and are likewise going to be more likely to be less committed.

Celebrities get a very weird reaction from things that society deems as unjust. Instead of being punished, celebrities will often we rewarded for going to a drug rehab center. The publicity that many media outlets give celebrities as a result of checking into such a place is enormous. And as they say, any publicity is good publicity. Such public displays are key in boosting sales, selling out concerts, or otherwise benefiting celebrities. This almost positively influences them to be drug addicts.

Closing Comments

Every time a celebrity goes to a drug rehabilitation center, there is usually a lesser chance of long term success because of the aforementioned reasons. This should not discourage the average recovering addict, who is more focused and willing to become an addict free patient for a long period of time- indefinitely. This isn’t to say that celebrities can’t overcome an addiction, but their environment is working against them in the process of them obtaining the help they need.
